Hertfordshire was originally the area assigned to a fortress constructed at Hertford under the rule of Edward the Elder in 913. The name Hertfordshire appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 1011.

Directions:

Directions from M40 Leave M40 at junction 2 taking A355 to Amersham and continue to Chesham A416. When you reach Chesham follow signs to Berkhamsted look out for a park and duck pond on your left the Town Hall on your right. At the next roundabout turn left signposted to Chartridge if you pass Sainsburys on your right you have gone too far. The Chartridge Conference Centre is approximately 3 miles on the right from this roundabout past the golf club on the left and the Bell Public House on the right. Directions from A41 Take the exit signposted Chesham A416 follow the signs to Chesham. When you reach Chesham down a steep hill you will see a Total garage on the right follow the signs to Amersham A416. At the next roundabout turn right passing Sainsburys on the left. At the next roundabout turn right to Chartridge. The Conference Centre is approximately 3 miles on the right from this roundabout past the golf club on the left and the Bell Public House on the right. From the M25 anticlockwise Exit at Junction 20 for the A41 and follow the directions from A41 above. From the M1 Leave M1 at junction 8 and follow A414 to Hemel Hempstead. At the two way roundabout follow signs to Aylesbury A41 then continue as the A41 route above. From the M25 clockwise Heathrow Exit M25 at Junction 18. Follow signs to Amersham A404 passing through Little Chalfont. Keep following the signs to Amersham you will turn right past a BP service station go to the end of that road Woodside Road and turn right at the mini roundabout towards Chesham A416. When you reach Chesham follow directions as given above from the M40. By Train The nearest main line station is Amersham Metropolitan line from Baker Street and British Rail Marylebone. Chartridge is approximately 15 mintues by taxi. Taxis are readily available in the station forecourt. The nearest Underground Station is Chesham 5 minutes by taxi you will need to change at Chalfont and Latimer for Chesham.
