Hertfordshire was originally the area assigned to a fortress constructed at Hertford under the rule of Edward the Elder in 913. The name Hertfordshire appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 1011.

M25 Take junction 23 off M25 heading north on A1. Turn off at junction 6. Over 2 roundabouts following signs to Stevenage. 3rd roundabout take the third exit sign posted to Knebworth B197 . Follow road for approx. 1 miles The Chequers Inn is on the left hand side. A1 Southbound Turn off at junction 7 taking the first exit at the roundabout at the top of the slip road. Straight over the second roundabout follow the duel carriage way and take the 3rd exit at the third roundabout. Down the hill to the 4th roundabout take the first exit B197 sign posted to Knebworth. At the mini roundabout take the 2nd exit. Straight over the next 2 mini roundabouts taking you through Knebworth. The Chequers Inn is approx. 1 mile on the right hand side.
